The sleep I manage to get is fidgety and restless. No dreams, no Golden Mirror. Nothing. I wake to Zyrik’s small fingers trying to pry open my eyelids. I grab his hands and pretend to bite them. Zyrik squeals and tries to pull away. But he can’t escape my firm grasp. His eyes narrow, and he barely pushes his tongue out. Within seconds he’s bested me.

I laugh and poke his ribs. “Did you use your gift on me, Little Ryk?”

His giggle softens the room. I look over to find the beds of Swivel and Kamon empty. Zyrik places his hands on either side of my face, turning my attention back to him. He points to himself then outside.

“So you want to leave me?”

He twirls his finger near his head then extends it down to his shoulder.

“Sabeen, huh?” I ask teasingly.

He lifts his shoulder in a half shrug, but he can’t hide the lopsided grin on his face.

“Fine, go. I didn’t want to hang out with you anyway.” I poke him again in the ribs and he bubbles over in laughter. He jumps to his feet, points to me, then motions me to follow.

“You mean you wouldn’t mind having me tag along?”

Zyrik grins and nods. Then he crisscrosses his heart to offer me assurance.

It doesn’t take long before I’m following Zyrik, Sabeen, and some other children across one of the bridges. The depth and distance isn’t as paralyzing as that of the chasm to the prison cells. So my inner demons are denied the chance to torment me with their whispers.

We continue on a path that leads us to a large open space surrounded by large rock formations. Nahk women are sitting on the other side of the field, deep in conversation. They pause long enough to wave and smile at their children, before they return to their discussion.

The children bring out a medium-sized leather ball and quickly scatter into teams. I sit near the women unsure whether I should join them in their conversation. They barely notice me as they continue talking. But that doesn’t matter; my focus is on Zyrik.

It takes me a moment to figure out what game they’re playing. It’s a form of keep away, where the only way for the other team to get the ball is to tag the player with the ball or to intercept it in the air. Points are appointed with each successful pass to a teammate.

I’m impressed with Zyrik, how well he grasps the concept. I observe how he communicates, and how receptive the others are to him. With a simple motion of his hand his teammates know exactly what he wants them to do.

Sooner or later he will have to return to the East. I hope he’ll be able to develop relationships like this when the time comes for him to pick up his father’s torch. He’ll face many obstacles from those who’ll resist his rise to power.

Will Zyrik expect me to be at his side? Can I so easily return to Black Ridge Castle? I will.
